The training standard is a formal qualification in the field of dermal therapy, this means that the therapist is recognised as a specialist in dermal therapy procedures such as laser, IPL, microdermabrasion , skin needling and chemical peels.

A Dermal Therapist is different to a beauty therapist or paramedical aesthetician as they have training specifically in the field of dermal therapy.

The scope of practice for a Dermal Therapist includes advice in relation to other surgical or medical procedures, aspects of pre and post operative care, Doctors assistant and Practice Management and Administration.

The title Dermal Therapist is currently unregulated and some operators are using this title for commercial advantage.

THE BEAUTY THERAPIST

The training between a Dermal Therapist and Beauty Therapist varies significantly and they have very different responsibilities.

Beauty Therapists typically have had less formal training and concentrate on ‘beauty’ treatments that are superficial and include facials, nails and massage.

A Dermal Therapist has studied for four or more years and has gained an understanding of the integumentary system.

As well as this, a Dermal Therapist has a working knowledge of cosmetic medicine and often works with other health professionals such as dermatologists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons.
